Cambridge: Where I grew up

Hello class!
You have been writing about your hometowns, so today I'll tell you about where I live: Cambridge, Massachusetts. Cambridge is just across the Charles River, so it is very close to Boston. My favorite thing about Cambridge is that it has a lot of parks and trees. One of my favorite parks is Danhey Park, where I played soccer as a child.
<---This is a picture of Danehy Park.

I also like Cambridge because it has lots of different restaurants from different parts of the world. My favorite place to eat is a Mexican restaurant called Anna's Taqueria in Porter Square, where you can get tacos, burritos and other Mexican food. Cambridge also has good Ethiopian, Middle Eastern, Asian and Caribbean food.

My favorite thing to do in Cambridge is to walk along the Charles River at night and look at the lights of Boston and the moon. On Sunday, Cambridge closes Memorial Drive, a busy street near the river, so that people can run and ride their bikes along the river.
<---This is a picture of the Charles River at night.

One of the most interesting things about Cambridge is that there are a lot of universities. For example, I live right near Harvard University, one of the oldest universities in the USA! It was started in 1636! If you have ever been to Harvard Square in Cambridge, then you have been to Harvard University. Another university in Cambridge is called Massachusetts Institute of Technology (also called MIT), which is where my parents work.

If you have any questions about Cambridge, please comment on this post and I will answer them!

Thank you for reading,
-Will

My home town

I was born in Lianyuan Hunan in China. It was a big town, also it is a middle sized city now. I hope you didn't get confused. It is a same place. I say that because it is totally changed from when I grew up.

First the river is changed. There were many piers and fields along it. I could see the river's bottom with grasses and many rocks when I followed my mother to go carry the water to drink. Now, many houses and factories stand on both sides of the river. I can't see anything on the bottom, nothing except dirty water. No water to drink, nobody even swimming in it. Good thing we have running water now.

Also the roads are all different now. The narrow dirt roads where people walked have been changed to wide asphalt streets and there are many cars and motorcycles going back and forth on it. I don't think anyone will ever walk on the road without shoes again. The taller and modern houses have been built all over the town. In the summer, some people think that the old short houses were more comfortable to live in. They were built of earth brick and warmed in the winter and cooled in the summer. I can't see anymore fields near the town except some gardens.

The best change is people's opinions. When I studied in grade school, there were seven other neighborhood classmates the same age with me, but I'm the only one that studied in middle school. High school and college were out of the question. A lot of parents thought that planting grain and feeding a pig would make money. It had more benefit than spending money to learn something. Now many families have college students. The parents now support their children to go to school until high school and college if they can. They know how important it is to progress their knowledge.

I love my home town even when somethings changed for the worse. A lot of things are much better than before. It is not only that the place has changed to be more beautiful but also the people change to have children become well schooled.

GUATEMALA, El Pais de la Eterna Primavera

Guatemala City

Tikal

Lago de Atitlan

I was born in Guatemala in the most beautiful month of the year..March or course. Some years ago....many years ago... almost half century ago. My country is relatively small to USA. The land area is 108,430 square kilometers and the population almost 14 million.

The weather is nice almost all year. From November to April is Summer time and from May to October is Winter time. My country is called "The Country of Eternal Spring" (El Pais de la Eterna Primavera). The trees are always full of leaves and the rosebushes are always
blooming.

In Guatemala we have beautiful lakes such as Lago de Atitlan, Lago de Izabal and Lago de Peten Itza; incredible volcanos such as Volcan de Agua, Volcan de Fuego, Volcan de Pacaya, etc. and amazing archaeological sites such as Tikal, Quirigua , Zaculeo, etc. and the unique Antigua Guatemala.

Antigua Guatemala

Guatemala is the most modern country of Central America but not the biggest, nor the most literate. The biggest country in Central America is Nicaragua and the most literate is Costa Rica.

Guatemalan people is courteous, kind, warm and most of them with a good sense of humor. We make a joke even with the worst things that happen to us.

Unfortunately, we are passing through the worst crisis we have ever had. There are lack of jobs, the price of food, clothes, education, health....everything is expensive and the salaries are low, we have gangs and a lousy government.

I know all over the world are beautiful, breathtaking and unforgettable places; places where you feel closer to God and I'm pretty sure that you, just like me, in some place of your country feel that way.

My country El Salvador has beautiful beaches

I am from El Salvador, in my country we have a lot beautiful beaches and many places to enjoy .The first beautiful place I remember is a beach the name Spanish is call (El puerto de la libertad). There are a a lot restaurants to eat all kind of seafood. There is a long wharf where the people go to fishing and some time like to go jump to the water like playing. There are also some people to sell all kind of decorations like a necklaces, bracelets, rings and decorations to put on the wall. They are made with a beautiful stones and seashell that have been brought to the shore by the waves. They have to sell a raw seafood too. Near to this beach are others beaches like El majahual, El Sunzal, Conchalio, La paz and El Obispo. On weekends there are celebration on the beach for everyone. There are like five discotheque near the beach where people go to enjoy.
I was born in (Sanvicente). This city has a beautiful amusement park where the people like to enjoy to swim and play in the water. This is really beautiful.

This picture is the amusement park in my city the name is (Amapulapa). The first picture is the wharf of the beach the name is (El puerto de la libertad.

Welcome to Vermont!

I grew up in a small town called Essex Junction, Vermont. Vermont is the state bewtween New York and New Hampshire. Vermont gets its name from the French "Ver (vert)= green and mont (montagne)= mountain; therefore, Vermont is known as the Green Mountain State.

I was born in Burlington, Vermont. Burlington is the biggest city near my house, but compared to Boston, it is a very tiny city. Essex Junction is a small town about 3 miles northeast of Burlington. My parents, grandparents and my mother's brother's family have lived in this town since the early 1970s. When I was born, my parents started building their own house, so I spent the first 6 months living with my parents at my grandparents' house.

There isn't a lot to see in my town. It is a very relaxing and slow paced place. There is no traffic, but almost everyone has a car. You cannot rely on public transportation. If you go there, you would see many people walking, biking and playing outside. There are two shopping plazas in the middle of town, and there is a giant park across from the middle school. The park has a public swimming pool where I used to take swimming lessons. I went to elementary, middle and highschool in Essex Junction. The schools are very good. IBM is the major company in Essex Junction, and this has helped the growth and economy of the town.

beautiful guatemala

This picture is from the new antigua guatemala.

I was born in guatemala in 1960 and grew in the city I lived in the same place for 10 years. Later I moved out of the city to one town, Antigua, guatemala. This is the most wonderful town because it survived two earthquakes: 1923 and 1976. In this town the climate is similar to Massachusetts. This is one of the first town in Guatemala. Around the town are 3 volcanos. That's why it's prone to earthquakes, in this town Holy Week is celebrated every year. Good Friday is celebrated specially. Two hours from the town is the one special lake Atitlan because the water is very clear and this town live only natives and is visited by many tourists from around the world. I recommend to you to take a vacation there. It is very nice.
This picture is after the first earthquake.

Think of this blog as a way for me and your classmates to learn something new about you and maybe find things we have in common with each other.

Next week I am going to show you how to post your own blogs so that you can write questions and answers or lead a topic for discussion. For now, I want you to get used to blogging.

Assignment 1: Computer Experience

Good morning everyone,

Today I would like you to blog about your computer experience and knowledge. What can you do with computers? What skills do you have? Do you consider yourself a beginner, intermediate or advanced computer user? What do you use computers for? What kinds of websites or program do you know how to use? What can you teach others about computers and/or the Internet? What would you like to be able to do? What is one question you have about using computers?

Write well!

Erin : )

Welcome to our class blog!

Hello everyone.

This is my first blog ever. Do you know what a blog is?
A blog is short for weblog. A blog is an Internet journal that you can keep forever, if you want to. You can ask and answer questions, write about experiences, share information and ideas, and of course, practice your English in an online community.

I hope you enjoy exploring blogging with me this cycle!
