I was born in Lianyuan Hunan in China. It was a big town, also it is a middle sized city now. I hope you didn't get confused. It is a same place. I say that because it is totally changed from when I grew up.
First the river is changed. There were many piers and fields along it. I could see the river's bottom with grasses and many rocks when I followed my mother to go carry the water to drink. Now, many houses and factories stand on both sides of the river. I can't see anything on the bottom, nothing except dirty water. No water to drink, nobody even swimming in it. Good thing we have running water now.
Also the roads are all different now. The narrow dirt roads where people walked have been changed to wide asphalt streets and there are many cars and motorcycles going back and forth on it. I don't think anyone will ever walk on the road without shoes again. The taller and modern houses have been built all over the town. In the summer, some people think that the old short houses were more comfortable to live in. They were built of earth brick and warmed in the winter and cooled in the summer. I can't see anymore fields near the town except some gardens.
The best change is people's opinions. When I studied in grade school, there were seven other neighborhood classmates the same age with me, but I'm the only one that studied in middle school. High school and college were out of the question. A lot of parents thought that planting grain and feeding a pig would make money. It had more benefit than spending money to learn something. Now many families have college students. The parents now support their children to go to school until high school and college if they can. They know how important it is to progress their knowledge.
I love my home town even when somethings changed for the worse. A lot of things are much better than before. It is not only that the place has changed to be more beautiful but also the people change to have children become well schooled.
Xiaojia,
ReplyDeleteThis is a fascinating post! I really like your description of your town/city. When was the last time you visited your hometown? Are there any laws that protect the environment? Is it illegal to dump chemicals or trash into the rivers? It is quiet a shame that this has happened. It sounds like your town has gone through a major transition. The good news is that education has become such a priority. When did people start going to college? Were both women and men allowed to attend college in the beginning?

ReplyDeleteYour town as you described it seems to be very beautiful. It is a shame that most of the time development carries with it destruction and contamination.
Thank you for your attention. I haven't been to my hometown since June, 2007. I don't know whether there are some laws or not to protect the river. Recent years I had heard that some dirty water was from a factory that had to purify it before it went into the river. I saw many dumpsters beside the road when I lived there. Both girls and boys are allowed to attend college if their family has enough money.
ReplyDeleteXiaojia, I'm really glad you added these pictures because I had a totally different picture in my head as to what your town looks like. What are these pictures of?
ReplyDeleteThe picture with the water wheel was found on the internet. Because of the dirt road, the houses and the fields in the picture are almost the same as my hometown before, but the waterwheel is smaller and the river isn't as deep as my hometowns.
ReplyDeleteThe other picture is an area of my hometown/city. It is an apartment that is located in west area of the city. There is a bell tower and a fountain in the photo. This area was built in 1998 and the building area is about 26 million square feet.
Thanks for the explanations Xiaojia! I cannot believe that gorgeous building is an apartment building. I wonder how much a place like that would cost?! I am assuming it would be extremely expensive. You are quite the blogger!
ReplyDeleteYes, it's one of the luxurious areas of the city. The price is about 1300 yuan per square feet. It's too expensive for me to buy a house from there. I only could pass by there when I went to work everyday before I came to America.
