My name is Ardjan. I was born in Tirana, capital of Albania. Tirana is the biggest city in Albania. Twenty years ago streets in this city like every city in Albania were empty. Whole day you could see only few cars, but now is extremely different. This building in a pics is main courpus of Politechnic University of Tirana.

Ardjan, Is this were you went to school? It is a gorgeous building. So, you lived in Tirana the whole time you lived in Albania? What is this city famous for or known for? What is important to the people? How has the city changed over your lifetime (except for the population growth)?

ReplyDeleteThis is a building were I went to University. This building was built during the first world war from italians. In that period they made the first masterplan for the new center of the city.They built except this building and some others. The idea of this masterplan was to build a new city imitating Paris.Tirana was a small city with old houses.Italians made new roads, new buildings but when the comunist Party came in power everything changed. They start building ugly and uniform buildings.The idea of a Paris was a dream and stayed only in papers. All cities in Albania were similar. In latest 60's they destroyed all churches and many historic buildings.
After 1990 many people from other cities came in Tirana. They start building their houses without any plan.Tirana in 90's was very chaotic.These last ten years things start changing. Now Tirana is a modern city.
Wow! Ardjan, this is so interesting. So, what do the buildings and houses look like now? I am assuming they are no longer uniform. How do the people in Tirana and in Albania feel about losing these older historical buildings? Were they pleased because many of them reminded them of the communist rule? Or, is there a feeling that the people have lost a piece of their history and story as a people and country?
ReplyDeleteThe Major of Tirana decided to painted in diferent colors most of buildings wich are built where in power were a comunist party.He said that everyone with their money is free to paint or to write whatever they want in those buildings. Now you can see buildings in many kind of colors.In that period i remember that came from others countries and painted some of them. They opened a exposition with pics from those buildings. For some that was beautiful, but for some others was ugly. I think that was ugly too.But the worst in my opinion is that you can't build e new building if you dont paint that in rainbow colors.
